Virtual Reality based Music Intervention in an Acute Geriatric Setting
Date: 2023-2025
Investigator(s): Dr. Julia Chabot (PI) and Dr. Harmehr Sekhon (co-PI)
Funding Source(s): SMRC CARE Grant

Exploring the use of virtual reality (VR) combined with music to support the mental well-being of older adult inpatients at St. Mary’s Hospital. By comparing immersive VR music sessions to standard music listening, the study aims to assess mood, pain, and overall experience during hospital stays. Results from this feasibility trial will help shape future innovations in geriatric care.
Nature-based Virtual Reality Intervention for Depression in Alzheimer’s Dementia
Date: 2024-2026
Investigator(s): Dr. Harmehr Sekhon (PI), Dr. Sofia Nene (co-PI) and Dr. Julia Chabot (co-PI)
Funding Source(s): SMRC CARE Grant and Canadian Alzheimer's Society

Test of a home-based virtual reality (VR) program to reduce depression in older adults with Alzheimer’s dementia. Over four weeks, participants use immersive nature VR experiences, with impacts on mood, stress, and well-being compared to standard video viewing. The study assesses feasibility and aims to inform future large-scale interventions to support aging in place.
