The MOvIT+™ intervention addresses the critical need for post-delivery training and support for older adults using mobility aids and their caregivers. Dr. Hirsch Rosenfeld Distinguished Public Lecture in Family Medicine

APRIL 29, 2025 - DR. ISABELLE LEBLANC

Psychosocial suffering often manifests as bodily pain and can be overlooked in clinical practice when cultural expressions of distress are missed. Understanding how expert family physicians recognize and manage psychosocial distress can enhance the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health challenges. Findings suggest that the key to contextualizing these vague presentations lies in unraveling the patient’s narrative and finding shared humanity. In this collaborative conference with SMRC and the Department of Family Medicine, Dr. Isabelle Leblanc shared her research insights on the topic "Too much pain, doctor!": recognizing and contextualizing cultural expressions of pain. The St. Mary's Research Centre is part of the St. Mary's Hospital Centre, a facility of the Centre universitaire intégré de santé et de services sociaux de l'Ouest-de-l'Île de Montréal. Dr. Louise Potvin explored the effects of food donation programs on vulnerable communities across four regions of Quebec in her presentation on “Que deviennent les personnes qui utilisent le don alimentaire pour la première fois?” Dr. Anita Koushik addressed the social determinants of health (such as tobacco and physical activity) to improve health outcomes in her lecture on “Nutrition et cancer : fruits et legumes”. The event was held at the Bibliothèque de Côte-des-Neiges and attracted numerous members of the CDNNDG community, including Multicaf, Corporation de Développement Communautaire de Côte-des-Neiges and Université de Montréal. SMRC’s goal for this conference was to facilitate knowledge transfer between research institutions and the wider community, as well as create stronger community ties within the Côtedes-Neiges neighbourhoods.
